Thursday, 9 a.m.

A buyer needs 400 meters of special hose and maintenance for two overhead cranes. She searches her mail folder for the last similar request, copies the text, changes quantities and dates and sends it to five vendors. Two of the five emails still contain the name of the colleague from the old request.

A request like this takes around two hours, and the result is five slightly different things. Because every vendor gets a slightly different description, every vendor answers a slightly different question. Anyone who does not reply has to be chased, and nobody remembers to do it because it is not in any calendar.

The silent consequence is more expensive. Because a request takes so much effort, three vendors are never asked at all, and the order goes to the familiar one. And when someone wants to know a year later why this order went to this vendor, the answer sits in the inbox of a colleague who has left the company.
